An Unbirthday cake

Perusing the pages of Pinterest while on vacation last week, I came across the cutest idea for a cake, and I couldn’t wait to get home to try the idea out for our almost 3-year old baby, Coby. The boy is obsessed with trucks, and this cake was just the thing to bring a smile to his face.

The cake was easy to make. Well, easy except for the fact that I didn’t have a mixer or cake pans here in the apartment. So, I made a quick trip to Target and remedied that. I love to bake and do a lot from scratch, but for a regular chocolate cake, I’ve found that a mix will work just about as well. This was a quick cake, and the point was really the decoration.

So, I baked the cake and let it cool, then frosted it. I had purchased a cute CAT front end loader, and sterilized it in the dishwasher. I sprinkled the top of the frosted cake with some cocoa, the popped the impeccably clean front end loader on top of the cake. I then added bite-sized 3 Musketeers candies and malted milk balls to the “scoop” (just looked it up…that’s what it’s called!). I loaded it up in a box that I had picked up at Michaels (40%off coupon!) and headed over to play with our babies.

When I came in the door with the white box, Coby said, “Nana brought pizza.” No, sweet boy, it’s not a pizza – a cake for you! Well, he loved it. His birthday is coming in a month, so he’s been talking about his birthday party and cake (according to his mom). After I put the cake on the kitchen table, that cute kid dug through the “junk drawer” and found some candles, and loaded up the cake. I just found it charming – well, I find most things that kid does to be charming.

One of the many joys of being a Nana.
